Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in approximately millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
