No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
