Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
