Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
