The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
