Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Law enforcement report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other marked cars and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police say preliminary tests show the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; authorities are not yet cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they added.
City officials announced they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have asked to the community for information.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident rendered him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing attack in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in five years prior.
